Hi all,
Sounds like a good meeting again! I think it is good to stick with the monthly
meetings, so the next meeting should be the 2nd of July at 17.00 again. I will
send out a reminder the week before.
Cheers,
Remko

Dear Francesca, dear all,
I am sorry I could not join yesterday, as I was quite suddenly struck down with
a debilitating headache and had to lie down. Maybe a late reaction to my first
Covid vaccine shot (yay, I got one!).
Thanks a lot for the notes, Francesca. Quick question up front: Is it OK if we
put openscience@xxxxxxxxxxxxx in the cc of our emails for future preservation
and reference? This would mean that the emails would become public. Not many
have signed up to the list yet, so here is the subscription link again:

Chelle's Google doc is excellent, thanks for sharing! Just to add a few leads
on what is happening in Europe:
* The EU does have an ambitious open science policy:
https://ec.europa.eu/info/research-and-innovation/strategy/strategy-2020-2024/our-digital-future/open-science_en<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fec.europa.eu%2Finfo%2Fresearch-and-innovation%2Fstrategy%2Fstrategy-2020-2024%2Four-digital-future%2Fopen-science_en&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924651940%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=Xl4KWEmL9hQSjNXrTeyuFX%2B%2FRVwOzxSdOuwtuGrahZA%3D&reserved=0>
* The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC,

is an open science platform allowing to link federal data repositories and
conducting open data analysis in a central location. Institutions can sign up
to the EOSC Association
(https://www.eosc.eu/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eosc.eu%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924661668%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=PUsQU1tq1Im0jPgQgYUaJs55OCH89d0YNXacqj1XmS4%3D&reserved=0>)
and contribute to shaping the goals and implementation of the EOSC. Sadly, at
the moment it seems that the European member states are a bit protective of
their national data assets, but we might help change this by campaigning within
our national bodies to recognise the mutual benefits of open sharing between
states and with the world.
* Science Europe, an association of European research funding
organisations, has implemented Plan S across many European countries, mandating
open access to publications arising from the research they fund:
https://www.scienceeurope.org/our-priorities/open-access<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scienceeurope.org%2Four-priorities%2Fopen-access%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924661668%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=MIiDHZlrLB3OiXCiUHAziz5VggzjBrLUOm9WtFlJC5M%3D&reserved=0>.
* Science Europe is also pushing for open data sharing policies:
https://www.scienceeurope.org/our-priorities/research-data/sustainable-research-data/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scienceeurope.org%2Four-priorities%2Fresearch-data%2Fsustainable-research-data%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924671377%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=wtP05DMTU2YY4ioxSpBup0jLq8tJUgDBPbvsYS1%2BI4g%3D&reserved=0>
I think that the above initiatives give enough topics to discuss at the EGU
general assembly, and if we could manage to convince EGU and AGU of the value
of linking the European and US initiatives, this would be amazing.
I will let Remko create a doodle for the next meeting when he gets back next
week. I look forward to seeing you again!
Best regards,
Stan

Subject: Re: Open Science Document
Dear all,
just a quick email to summarise what we discussed today for those who could not
make it today - others who attended please add anything I forgot!
Summary of today's meeting
We had some discussion of the document that Chelle has been preparing for a
NASA Open Source Science Initiative:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WLAN5SYBlyno958my3Pdx1jiJ0IMZlChV38tBVsz_nY/edit?usp=sharing<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1WLAN5SYBlyno958my3Pdx1jiJ0IMZlChV38tBVsz_nY%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924721343%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=Innz9MXjrB4niISwrBVC%2B4QF1UNeXeW%2B0aCUE%2BTZTm0%3D&reserved=0>
and how we could use it as a source of inspiration for initiatives with similar
aims in Europe (though we may have a longer way to go given the much lower
level of integration of European states wrt USA!)
We also further discussed the idea of proposing "Open Science" as general theme
for next year EGU General Assembly.
Chelle is going to talk with Helen Glaves (new EGU president) next week and
Jamie will also try find out when EGU makes decision on general themes, and how
we could push forward a proposal.
We all felt there are several "macro-scale issues" that would be worth
discussing in a context like the EGU General Assembly, and that go beyond
contributions we usually discuss in our scientific session. For example: will
we ever have common mechanisms across European funders to foster open science?
or common policies across European environmnent agencies to share open data?
How do we get there?
EGU policy office may help organising debates around these issues (for example
inviting policy-makers from the European Commission)
Back to scientific topics: a lateral but related topic we could link is that of
knowledge accumulation: when it comes to open models, one risk of rewarding
publishing open-source software is the proliferation of similar tools and
unnecessary duplication of efforts - how do we tackle this?
Next steps:
Chelle / Jamie: send feedback about possible ways to engage with EGU for next
General Assembly at higher level
Remko / all: set-up next meeting (?)
Cheers,
Francesca

Dear all,
Just as a reminder that we scheduled a new meeting tomorrow at 17.00 CEST.
We'll use zoom again, as the number of participants seems to be limited for
jitsi, see below for the meeting link. Unfortunately, I won't be able to join
myself this time, but hope the discussion will be fruitful again!
Regards,
Remko

Dear Remko, dear all,
Thanks a lot for doing this! Here is the mailing list I promised to set up:
https://www.freelists.org/list/openscience<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.freelists.org%2Flist%2Fopenscience&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924741345%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=lTU%2BE0%2Fn%2BqvLrWXuHauRdks%2BfVgdZcIXxWll6zvElvo%3D&reserved=0>
We could link the list to a website if we want to create one, e.g.
github-pages, but for the moment, it is just a bare-bones mailing list. The
list is currently open for unmoderated subscriptions and posts, please let me
know if you would prefer to have a more exclusive list for organising
activities. I think that we should invite any colleagues that are interested in
Open Science.
Cheers
Stan

Subject: Open Science Document
Dear all,
Following our meeting last week, I uploaded a very first draft document on
google-drive:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/10wjBhg7UWtvdRKTR2uh8EzD_FdOD0rV4RB3XsRpdAXA/edit?usp=sharing<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F10wjBhg7UWtvdRKTR2uh8EzD_FdOD0rV4RB3XsRpdAXA%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=04%7C01%7Cremko.nijzink%40list.lu%7C6fa985c6fc0f4912ba9008d9281d255f%7C113c1ddaf91c45f2948bd1622d38c152%7C0%7C0%7C637584927924741345%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=wEuuGvS9r0qbLADVwLLiZXrs9HWFk5EgaFgI707yDYo%3D&reserved=0>
I added already some text to have a start, but feel free to add more text and
make edits. I added everyone that joined the meeting to this mail, but if I
forgot someone, feel free to forward it.
Regards,
Remko
