Teenagers and twenty-somethings have always spent a LOT more time socializing with their peers on a constant basis than older people do. In past years, it was on the phone constantly. Less nerdy teenagers more so than the more nerdy ones. But that phenomenon doesn't last forever. We have to see whether the twitter generation will go on tweeting after they grow up. I'm fairly certain that they won't to the same degree, even if the social networking tool becomes more mainstream in the work place (like linked-in). Corporations are also trying to make this work for them, creating internal social networking walled gardens. I haven't noticed this being a success, but maybe I just don't know. (I think it's a bit odd to expect an engineer to only want to interact internal to the corporation. Doubtful that an engineer would have come up with such a silly idea.)
