Correct. But they need the rights to stream the content everywhere. Two very
different businesses. Obviously Comcast is well down the road with this
strategy, thanks to their 30% ownership in Hulu. AT&T owns 10% of Hulu.
And, in the OTT side of their business, there's no reason to expect them to
be neutral services, obviously.
Neutrality is important if you are trying to sell bundles of content - you may
be able to offer better bundles (lower prices or zero rating) if you provide
the ISP or cellular service as well. But you don’t want to be tied to a single
company or platform - Amazon Prime Video is an example of a service that is too
tightly tied to Amazon and Fire TV.
The bigger issue is that we are moving to “vertical silos,” as each content
conglomerate creates their own service. The churn rate for OTT subscriptions is
now increasing.
But in their ISP capacity, there is every reason. AT&T and Verizon, as they
launch their respective OTT services, should be able to understand the reason
for net neutrality implicitly. Their own business model depends on it!
DUH. This is EXACTLY the reason that the whole Net Neutrality debacle was
unnecessary. Nobody is going to block anyone that is offering a legal service,
and broadband performance has improved enough to make fast lanes unnecessary.
We need a technically savvy FCC these days, who can comprehend something that
simple. Not the confused ideologues we have in office, who pat themselves on
the back for not wanting to regulate the neutrality of OTT sites. As if that
was ever even on the table.
We need to shut down the FCC. It’s time to manage the spectrum efficiently
using technology, not politics and K street lawyers.
Competition is much more efficient than regulation. The growth of broadband
prior to 2014, and the massive deployments of cellular WITHOUT the FCC’s “help”
are prime examples.
