A bit of drama queen talk, IMO. First off, IIRC, the only requiremnt is to
opt-in, as opposed to opt-out. Hardly the end of the world.
More to the point. The broadband providers, especially the fixed service ones,
have a big advantage over any web site. They are essential, they are monopolies
or very close to it, so they have no competition to speak of, or to worry
about. It should come as no surprise if they are held to a higher standard than
any old web site.
Or another example. If the broadband providers were to be held to a relatively
strict reliability standard, that too should come as no surprise. Nor should it
be a surprise that the likes of Google and Facebook would NOT be held to any
similar reliability standard.
Apples and oranges. Telecom is essential. Google and Facebook are not. On the
other hand, *if* Verizon, or whatever other broadband provider, wanted to
establish their own cool web site, for shopping or what have you, they can do
so, just like Google and Facebook have done. And then, they will have
guaranteed access to any and all broadband networks.
