But there may be a limit to how many competitors can compete

Craig has such a hard time getting these evolutions. The two trend lines in the
article tell the story, of the old way giving way to the new way, bit by bit.
What Craig considers to be permanent competitors, unchanging, are not. Content
owners also see that graphic, Craig.
Consider the list Craig posted:
Cable MVPDs
DBS MVPDs
FTTH MVPDs
Sling TV
Sony Play Station Vue
DIrecTV Now
Hulu Live
Municipal broadband/TV systems
That list of competitors has changed significantly over time, and it won't
remain the same as Craig listed it. Why would anyone expect it to?
Not so long ago, there was just the first one. Craig would likely have argued,
back then, that nothing more was ever going to be needed, or be in demand! Then
DBS showed up, only to be overtaken by people's expectation of broadband
service to go along with their legacy MVPD. So DBS systems morph into
Internet-based systems and/or are acquired by ISPs.
The change is the growing number of OTT possibilities, unrestricted by
neighborhood shackles. That list can easily keep growing. Why? Because every
player has a nationwide footprint. Each service can be fine-tuned to a
particular set of tastes, and yet still be profitable, with a nationwide
footprint. One size does not need to fit all. That model wouldn't work with the
technology restrictions, pre-broadband era.
Clearly, content owners are paying attention. They want to play in more than
just one sandbox.
(Craig went ballistic, evidently. Again, his true colors showing.)
