As always, stuck in the past, Craig. Any number of simultaneous models can be
used over the Internet, unlike what was possible before. Your repeated comments
about "retrans consent" and "dual revenue streams" are simply legacy. The old
way. With the Internet, depending how the OTT sites are organized, the
broadcasters and the TV networks can continue to have the legacy revenue
streams, from ads and from third party subscription OTT sites, or they can get
the revenues directly from ads and their own subscription OTT sites, or they
can offer ad-supported-only content as they do with FOTA now. All of these
models can coexist. I happen to think that the legacy-styled VMVPDs, with
emphasis on "live streams," will peter out in due course, because people simply
do not value the live streams as much as the broadcasters seem to think. But
hey, let them have a go. The simple FACT is, whether the content owners like it
or not, people in droves are NOT sticking to the formula the content owners
would have preferred. So Craig, get over it.
The only new twist here is to get the local broadcasters, which IMO has to be
via their parent station group organization, also involved, with more than just
the old "live stream." Get the station groups in the act of providing the OTT
sites.
Sinclair cannot create an OTT service offering all of the broadcast
networks that the stations they now and manage carry, WITHOUT the
contractual rights to those streams.
Sinclair can obtain the rights one by one, as the TV networks understand how
important it is to provide their content the way people like to consume it. And
as Sinclair is doing that, they build up this OTT infrastructure. You have to
get past this notion that "rights" are set in stone.
The Internet is just now becoming capable of handling the
tremendous traffic
I've explained this many times. "The Internet" evolves about as fast as people
are likely to make the switch. The problems with streaming have (luckily) been
limited to the (distributed) servers of a particular OTT site. I had absolutely
no problem streaming anything I wanted, last Sunday, for example.
