Prashant, Selecting MPEG-2 versus MPEG-4/AVC requires some tradeoff analysis. At lot depends on how much bandwidth you have available on your network, particularly at the edge. The newer codecs wil give you the close to the same video quality at much lower bit rates than MPEG-2. The tradeoff for normal TV channel changing it that the time between I-frames can be much longer, so the time to display the first full frame can be up to 2 minutes in the extreme case. (Tom, what's the max time between I-frames in AVC? ) For recorded content, such as movies, this isn't an issue since the recording can just start with a full frame picture. However, for live TV it is an issue, since you could join a show and have to wait a long period of time before getting a ful frame to display. Several vendors have rather complex tricks to handle this case, but it isn't pretty. Also, the AVC realtime encoder/decoder products are still in their infancy, so you would have a bit of an evaluation cycle to perfom to select the appropriate systems.
