There have been more recent additions to the 15th-annual Technology Retreat of the Hollywood Post Alliance, being held February 17-20 at the Westin Mission Hills Resort in Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs area), California. Check out the program here:

In the main program, CBS is joining ABC, Fox, NBC, PBS, the CW, Telemundo, and the NAB (among others) on the broadcasters panel, and the BBC and the European Broadcasting Union will also be at the event. What does the delay to June 12 mean? What happens next? What is ATSC 2.0? What about mobile broadcasting? Come and find out.

Among recent additions to the software panel are Chris Lennon of Harris on BXF, Al Kovalick of Avid on RT Media Services, Simon Eldridge of Omneon on Service-Oriented Storage, and Michael Sterling of National TeleConsultants with an AMWA update. Not sure what AMWA is or how it affects you? Come and find out!

4K is a lot of resolution. How do you deal with it? A recent addition to the main program is Dave Cavena of Image Trends on the correction of defects in 4K scanning using advanced technologies. Speaking of advanced technologies, how about image deconvolution to correct for such "lens defects" as the picture being out of focus? Learn about that, and much more, in the "Visions of the Future" supersession.

That's the main program. There have also been additions to the breakfast roundtables. Do you know about DVP? It's the industry's Digital Video Package file-based masters initiative, and it will be explained by Disney's Annie Chang. Peter Wilson will describe non-traditional 3-D acquisition on Thursday morning and MUPPITS, the European Multiple-User Post-Production IT Services project for sharing, on Friday morning.

Eric Goodmurphy of Ross Video will describe the openGear terminal-equipment platform. Jeroen Brouwer of Philips will describe "Comfortable 3D Viewing through Depth file format." Bruce Jacobs of the PBS HD Quality Group will tell how "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Multiformat World.

Speaking of multiple formats, NBC Universal's Sheau Ng will cover MXF, Merrill Weiss the latest developments in AXF, and Belden's always-entertaining Steve Lampen the use of Ethernet in a broadcast environment. Have you ever just wanted to hang around someone who has lots of knowledge and have some pour out on you? The aforementioned Steve Lampen will ask questions of the aforementioned Merrill Weiss at a roundtable to give you just such an opportunity.

Those are just a few of the recent additions to the roundtables. There are so many this year that we've expanded the space to accommodate them, so, if you'd like one or two, we CAN accommodate you. Please contact me at the e-mail address above.

Then there's the demo room. There are too many recent additions to list, but one that I'm particularly interested in seeing myself is RabbitHoles Media's full-color motion holography. Remember, the HPA technology-demo room is where Panasonic introduced variable-frame-rate video shooting, Lucas Digital showed the camera-attitude sensor used in shooting the recent "Star Wars" movies, Sony introduced HDCAM SR, etc. Everything shown will be a technology not yet seen at an NAB show.

Then there are the prizes. Last year, one participant went home with an HD camcorder for correctly answering the toughest quiz question. This year's prizes, thanks to Pete Putman of Roam Consulting, include (so far): a Toshiba XD-E500U upscaling DVD player, a Sanyo CG9 Xacti digital movie camera, a Corinex HD-over-power-lines connectivity kit, Pinnacle Video Transfer, a Radiient Select-4 4x1 HDMI switcher, and a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-950Q ATSC/NTSC/QAM USB receiver. And registrants who fill out surveys before the event get a chance to win a Blu-ray player, courtest of Integrated Media Technologies.

Did I mention the laser bowling? I didn't mention a lot. Check the online program for MUCH more:

One last thing: The temperature fell below freezing today even in Florida, Alabama, New Mexico, and Nevada. There were parts of the U.S. where it went below zero degrees Fahrenheit. In Rancho Mirage today, it's also cold -- a mere 72 (no wind, 38% humidity).

TTFN,
Mark
