Optical Disks Used for Long-Term Storage by 2010
From 2010 there will be fewer opportunities for optical disks to be
used as a distribution medium. Instead, they are likely to develop
new applications in long-term data storage.

The role of optical disks as a medium for content distribution will
end with Blu-ray Disc and High-Definition Digital Video Disk (HD
DVD), many believe. So what will happen with storage systems from
2010? A number of engineers in the field responded with a common
forecast: the future looks bleak for optical disks. Optical disks
have achieved widespread use as packaged media for content
distribution, with compact disks (CD) used for audio and digital
video disks (DVD) for standard-definition television (SDTV) imagery.
At the end of 2005, the next-generation disk market for media like
Blue-ray Discs and HD DVD will take off, providing the distribution
medium for high-definition TV (HDTV).
