Anyone can buy a Roku, Google TV, or a Smart TV with access to different
content. Everyone is in the business of contracting for content, and in turn,
offering “special deals” that they negotiate with the content owners.
Almost everyone has multiple choices for ISP service, be it a cable/FIOS
company, one of 4 or more wireless telcos, or a satellite broadband provider.
It is disingenuous to claim that “special deals” offered by an edge provider
are different than “special deals” offered by an ISP.
The reality is that we have more choices for content that an any time in
history; ironically, the legacy content owners are now consolidating (e.g.
Disney/FOX) while new competitors like Netflix and Apple are proliferating.
The old adage of “must see TV” is dying, and a large number of legacy content
creators are providing the incentive to simply say NO to their propaganda...
