They knew the results before it aired, though. When the Olympics were conducted
across the pond, which was frequent, prime time coverage was always delayed.
How else? Prime time here begins at 11:00 PM CET. BTW, NBC has quite a bit of
truly live coverage during the day, this time.
It even works for the morning news shows. You can wake up late and
still get the news, without interruptions, in a fraction of the time.
News is rarely live anyway. I just turn on France 24, anytime, or go online.
Weather too.
"Live," or more accurately "linear" distribution of radio and TV content, was
simply the only game in town, ca. 90 years ago and 68 years ago, respectively.
It was an artifact of technological constraints. I see no reason why that
artifact has to be perpetuated, or given any special metaphysical significance,
other than being a cool option if it's actually called for. Most of the time,
it's not called for, IMO.
