http://www.nab.org/newsroom/pressrel/filings/FranchisingComs21306.pdf Not surprisingly, the NAB supports new entrants into the TV distribution market, since they expect the same must-carry/consent-to-carry agreements to apply to any new competitive service. At the same time, this takes the heat off making sure their OTA plants work as well as possible. http://www.ncta.com/pdf_files/Rutledge_Testimony_02.15.06.pdf Meanwhile, the NCTA wants to make sure that all entrants be made to follow the same rules, so the cable industry's large investments in the fiber upgrades aren't lost to too much competition. My prediction is that products like the Sony "cable-ready" HDTV PVR I pointed out yesterday, which integrates ATSC with cable reception, will soon be pulled off the market mysteriously, and that the excuse given will be "lack of demand." While these products provide an obvious benefit to consumers, such as those annoyed by the fact that their cable companies didn't carry ABC in HD for the Superbowl, the NAB's time is better spent getting more umbillical providers out there to carry their content. Not to mention that they aren't too thrilled about the recording and time shifting features to begin with. And the NCTA is far better off keeping its customers more totally committed to their own medium.
