Today's /Consumer Electronics Daily/ (formerly known as "Television
Digest") interviews a senior Panasonic exec who is closely monitoring
what's happening in the U.K. and has been deeply involved with the 3D
telecasts emanating from the London Olympics.

Some key facts that I though the group might find interesting:

--Cumulative U.S. Olympics in 3D viewership is "about a million"
households, according to Panasonic's CTO, which he called "quite
respectable for where we are today," citing 3D TV's three years on the
market.

--In addition to availability to 80% of wired U.S. pay-TV customers, 3D
broadcasts are being shown in the U.K., France, Italy, Norway, China,
Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Asia, Brazil, and Latin America.

--Signal is being generated from three trucks, 20 camera rigs, and 30
handheld cameras.

--Current 3D TV penetration in USA is about 3.2 million sets....expected
to reach 7 million by year end 2012.

--Active Shutter glasses are used by about 85% off those USA sets.

--NBC considers "tipping point" to generate more 3D TV events to be
about 20 million homes with 3D.

Also, of interest in the same issue:

--BBC and NHK are producing Olympics coverage in "Super Hi-Vision" --
which has 16 times the picture quality of HDTV and 22.2 channel surround
audio.

--Crusty journalists burst into spontaneous applause in London after a
demo of Super Hi-Vision on Monday, powered by JVC D-ILA 8K projector in
a theater and also Sharp 85-inch 8K LCD display in the theater's lobby.

--Crew of 20 is producing the Super Hi-Vision transmissions, which is
carried on fiber throughout the U.K. to Glasgow, Bradford, and London.
It's also being sent to theaters in Japan as well as to Washington.

--Opening ceremonies involved 142 high-def cameras, plus 3 of the Super
Hi-Vision native 8K cameras. Hand-built Hi-Vision cameras are running at
progressive frame rate of 60fps. Playback includes 22 speakers!

--Said journalist who saw the demos and live transmissions: "Our
immediate reaction was that for the first time, we were able to view a
huge TV screen as a landscape, with the eye free to wander over a wide
expanse of image. The all-enveloping sound was so embracing that during
swimming events, it was impossible to tell whether the applause for the
contestants was coming from the theater audience or from spectators at
the Aquatics Center."
