Some time ago, just when Linx seemed like it was on the verge of marketing a promising new ATSC receiver, zap, all bets are off when Linx gets sold to Micronas and the chip gets lost in the maze, or so it seems. Now, just as RCA was supposed to introduce a new set of affordable ATSC integrated TVs this summer (announced this past March), this article appears claiming Thomson (RCA brand) is getting out of TV production entirely, including the picture tube business. Gosh. I was supposed to show Craig an integrated 27" ATSC SDTV, listing for about $270, sometime this summer. Maybe he was right in his skepticism. However the press release is still showing up! http://www.rca.com/content/viewdetail/1,2811,EI700692-CI258,00.html? Speaking of picture tubes: The next article shows Sony also getting out of the picture tube business. So if there was still any doubt about what the bread and butter TV display technology of the very near future will be, I think the trend should be obvious by now. Krishnadas (06/28/2005 9:32 AM EDT) URL: http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=3D164903326 BANGALORE, India - Thomson will reportedly sell its remaining TV picture tubes business to India's Videocon. According to a Reuters report, the deal means the French company will exit television set production. Last year, Videocon bought Thomson's television tube manufacturing facility in Anagni, Italy. The deal reportedly will be announced later this week, and would mark Thomson's transition to a media and entertainment company. The sale to Videocon, once a well-known Indian consumer electronics manufacturer, is expected to total about $240 million. ------------------------------------------ LCD TV growth hits Sony jobs in Wales Colin Holland (06/30/2005 7:19 AM EDT) URL: http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=3D164904155 LONDON - Sony is to close two South Wales manufacturing facilities. The ceasing of CRT manufacturing in Bridgend will result in 400 job losses with a further 250 job losses at the Pencoed TV assembly factory. A workforce of 300 will be retained at Pencoed to focus on production of circuited boards for flat-screen televisions which are made in Barcelona and broadcast cameras. It will also maintain its logistics and customer support centre functions. In January 300 staff were made redundant at the Bridgend plant which Sony set up in 1973 and at their peak more than 4,000 were employed at its two factories. The Pencoed plant opened in 1992. Sony has blamed the decision on spiralling consumer demand for flat-screen televisions. Sony is also closing a Spanish CRT manufacturing facility in Barcelona and CRT production in Europe will now be concentrated in Slovakia. All material on this site Copyright 2005 CMP Media LLC.
