The dynamic range of the H.264 integer transform coefficients increases from a very convenient 16 bits for 8-bit samples to 17 bits for 9-bit samples, 18 bits for 10-bit samples, 19 bits for 11-bit samples and 20 bits for 12-bit samples. If one tried to save memory in their 8-bit/sample decoder by using 16-bit "short" instead of 32-bit "int" variables for coefficients, it could be an issue.
