An interesting take on the revolution at hand...
Who do you trust?
No question that the Millennials are all in for FAANG and anything that can
hack...
But this past year ALSO showed a new fault line forming among the baby Boomers
and what left of “The Greatest Generation.”
- NFL ratings down more than 10%
- America awakens to Fake News, as both the FANG and Traditional media focus on
capturing an audience high polarized by politics, with everyone playing “fast
and loose” with facts, or just ignoring the news that does not fit their
narratives, or in a few cases BLOCKING views they don’t like.
- Everyone getting really tired of all the ads, with more money flowing into
subscription TV services WITHOUT the ads.
This paragraph from the article says volumes:
Maybe it makes sense that entertainment and politics found their fortunes
inextricably bound this year — because both worlds are reeling from the
impact of a formidable outside force breaking in, resolved to change the
rules of an anachronistic game. Much like Donald Trump rocked Capitol Hill,
tech giants have upset Hollywood’s own apple cart.
And did anyone mention Time Magazines “Person” of The Year - The Silence
Breakers.
Could it be that the Apple Cart was full of rotten apples?
It’s a remarkable pivot, one that signals a distancing from the obscenely
profitable linear channel business on which media companies have long been
dependent in favor of cutting out the middleman: pay-TV distributors. Like
streaming services, Disney wants to establish a direct, data-rich
relationship with consumers; acquiring parts of Fox means fueling up to fill
this upcoming OTT pipeline.
Some might characterize this as “the mating of dinosaurs...”
So as we enter a new year, one that may be noted in history as a major
“inflection point,” it looks like the “obscenely profitable linear channel
business” is endangered.
It is well worth noting that this business model was enabled by nearly a
century of collusion by the political/media establishment. Yet now, it is
threatened by the invaders from the North, who threw in with Obama to regulate
those pesky competitors, and a political outsider who knows EXACTLY how to play
them using 140 characters...
Gotta love it!
Regards
Craig
