I think the "small uproar" was *completely* mitigated by the "addition" of Sunday Night Football. In fact, MNF and SNF essentially just switched nights. I don't have ratings data to back this up, but I imagine the audience switched nights, too. Anyway, and as has always been the case, teams competing on the cable-delivered night were available OTA in their home markets. Regarding the European Trend, I suspect the rest of the world is more fanatical about their football than we are about ours, judging from the amount of fences and razor wire that I have seen *inside* those stadia... As far as politicians getting upset with Bowl Games disappearing from OTA broadcasting, doesn't that "disenfranchise" the same people that the analog shutdown will? Should we not expect Congressional action again here? ;)
Good points Ken!I expect that the shift to cable for college bowl games MAY be used as a stimulus for fundamental change in the college football play-off system. Rather than a big fight over who gets the rights to the current mess, I think that political and economic forces will push for a true play-off system that can generate a much larger audience and ad revenues. When they hit the reset button, I expect there will be political pressure to put the playoffs on FREE TV, just like the upcoming NCAA Basketball Playoffs.
