Yesterday, the Engineering and Technology Awards committee of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences voted to investigate 15 technologies for possible Emmy award recognition. The fact that these technologies are being investigated does not necessarily mean they will get Emmy award recognition. It is also possible that there will be more than one award for a particular technology.

If you have any information that can help the investigative subcommittees, please contact them directly, or, if you prefer, contact me, and I will forward the information. The primary question the subcommittees need to answer is whether the technologies "materially have affected" television (note the past tense). "Television" is very broadly defined.

Here are the technologies and their investigative subcommittee chairs and co-chairs. If the people don't seem the greatest experts on those technologies, that's intentional; no one whose company is eligible for an award may chair a subcommittee investigating that technology. The numbers associated with the technologies are to identify them to committee members.

1 - Serial interface and protocols for server and VTR control: Chair - Jeff Moore <jmoore@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Beverley Milligan <beverley@xxxxxxxxx> 2 - Audience-measurement technology: Chair - Jeremy Rosenberg <JRosenberg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Marty Stein <mstein@xxxxxxxxxxxx> 3 - Delivery-confirmation system: Chair - Robin Wilson <Wilson@xxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Stan Moote <Stan.Moote@xxxxxxxxxx> 6 - "Next generation" video-compression analysis tools: Chair - Peter Zawojski <Peter.Zawojski@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Ed Fitzgerald <Ed.Fitzgerald@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> 7 - Development and standardization of file formats for the interchange of video and audio material: Chair - Christopher Taylor <CTaylor@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Paul Turner <pturner@xxxxxxxxxx> 8 - Pioneering development and deployment of MPEG-4 AVC systems for high-definition television: Chair - Adam Goldberg <adam.goldberg@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Jed Deame <jed@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> 9 - Pioneering RF combiners for adjacent-channel NTSC and ATSC on a common antenna system: Chair - Stephen Pumple <SPumple@xxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - David Brack <dbrack@xxxxxxxxxx> 11 - Ongoing live global HD cinemacasting: Chair - Seth Haberman <sethh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Peter DiIorio <peter.diiorio@xxxxxxxxxxx> 13 - Development of HDMI: Chair - Mike Tsinberg <mike@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Tom Hindle <Tom.Hindle@xxxxxxxxxxx> 14 - Development and productization of portable tapeless acquisition: Chair - Josh Kairoff <Josh@xxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Ray Blumenthal <rblumenthal@xxxxxxxxxxxx> 15 - The belt pack (distributed amplifier system in live production): Chair - Mark Schubin <TVMark@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair: Bill Jarr <wjarr@xxxxxxxxxxx> 17 - Development and deployment of consumer flat televisions capable of accurately detecting 24-fps cinema film content and then reproducing it without introducing artifacts in cadence, image-frame integrity, or dynamic range: Chair - Craig Cuttner <craig.cuttner@xxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Glenn Reitmeier <Glenn.Reitmeier@xxxxxxxxxx> 18 - Standardization of the ATSC digital television system: Chair - Larry Sayer <Larry.Sayer@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Skip Pizzi <Skip.Pizzi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> 23 - MPEG-4 AVC standard: Chair - Peter Symes <peter.symes@xxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair: Matthew Goldman <mgoldman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> 25 - TV on a PC: Chair - Michael Conway <MConway@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Co-chair - Steve Blumen <SBlumen@xxxxxxxxxx>

Thanks!

TTFN,
