[opendtv] Distant ATSC reception

I'm watching the last Monday Night Football in HD using the
Accurian STB, but I'm watching it from the Baltimore ABC station WMAR-DT
because the local Philly station WPVI-DT has blockies, momenatry
freezes and loss
of audio even though the parabolic antenna is pointed right at Mannaunk.
West Grove
is 52 miles from the Baltimore DT antenna but only 37 from Philly.
There's a hill between
me and WPVI-DT several miles from here that causes the reception problem.
A higher mast (another 15 feet maybe?) might fix it but that will be a
summer project.
In the mean time it's sure nice to be able to watch the last MNF with a
perfect, clean. clear
distant DT signal.
So people do watch from out of market and they always have.
Radio-Electronics and
Radio and TV News (magazines) from the late 40s through the mid 50s
usually had monthly DX TV
reception reports from all over the country and usually included photos
of the 50 to 75 ft tower and antenna(s)
the owner had set up as well as off screen photos showing TV test
patterns or call sign-logos of the
distant stations being received.
It's not out of the ordinary for those living in rural areas to receive
ATSC from a distant source, especially if
reception of the [more] local DTV signal is difficult because of hilly
terrain or other causes.
