I see a few things that seem to be merging, or heading that way. 1. DVD sales for many studios are greater than theatrical receipts 2. DVD releases are coming shorter and shorter periods after the film premieres. 3. DVD releases are getting to the point where they're simultaneous around the world 4. Large films are also seeing releases in many or all significant markets at the same time. 5. Films a year or so old are being aired on cable channels, interspersed with spots for movies on DVD and in theathers. This has caused so much clutter that many theatrical films are now featuring "only in theaters." 6. With the possible exception of last week, theatrical admissions have declined for 20 or more weeks straight, although monies are about flat. 7. Exhibitors figure they won't have to pay for the transition to digital, that the distributors will cover the costs. 8. One can go to a theater, pay $12 to see a movie, and have 20 minutes of commercials appear before the film does. Some of these theaters are slightly larger than a large living room. 9. TV sets are getting larger and larger.
