I find this speech very “troubling.” Apparently Rosenworcel is feeling the
urgency to shift the debate from regulation of online content to protecting Net
neutrality.
Net neutrality is not threatened. The ability of the FCC to regulate Internet
content is what is threatened here.
One need look no further than the Congressional hearings taking place this
week, as the establishment comes to grip with the reality that some of the
largest Internet services - Google, Facebook, and Twitter, do not share her
views on Net Neutrality.
Why should they? The Title II decision has NO effect on their operations, on
the content they block, on the content they promote, and the ability of our
global adversaries to use these Internet behemoths to influence our political
system.
The FCC was, and still is, used to regulate broadcast speech. The unfortunate
legacy of “The Fairness Doctrine” still lingers, even as Rosenworcel, while in
the FCC majority moved to extend the tentacles of the FCC into over-the-top
service regulation - the now dead STB NPRM that would have given the FCC the
ability to regulate these services, as they have done with broadcast and cable
for decades.
This speech was troubling. But not nearly as troubling as allowing the FCC to
regulate the Internet...

Craig
