     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

     I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - 9/11 - Warren Communication News reported that the New York DTT stations
are finally back at full power four years after the attack and that the
proposed Freedom Tower will be digital only. The story is no longer on their
site:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>

     - DisplaySearch HDTV Conference - Here's a report on the second day, with
some indication of the ongoing strength of CRTs, at least in unit sales. It
was also reported that the U.S. represented about a sixth of TV set sales
worldwide. There's also a comparison of pros and cons of different display
technologies:
<http://www.guidetohometheater.com/news/090105hdtv/>

     - Blu-ray vs. HD DVD - According to a report in the Financial Times, if
there's no compromise, Samsung plans a dual-format player (something that was
supposed to be impossible):
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/hd_tech/20050907/#samsung>

     - Slim CRTs - It's possible that something was lost in translation, but,
according to this report, a 32-inch TV using the L.G. Philips SuperSlim picture
tube would be just 15 inches deep:
<http://www.hardwarezone.com/news/view.php?id=2466&cid=6&src=rss>

     - July 1 -
          - A correspondent at the CEDIA conference reports that BenQ plans to
sell 37-inch LCD TVs with just NTSC tuners by shipping them to the U.S.
tuner-free and adding the tuners in California (as "options"?).
          - The Los Angeles area ads are late this week.
          - This week I've listed 92 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
53 (58%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 100% of those
manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to have integrated
DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 58 ads for TVs between 25- and
35-inch. Of those, three (5%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of
July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to
have integrated DTT-reception capability.
          - See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

          - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 - The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has finally
updated its list, as of September 8, to 1525 U.S. DTT stations operating in 211
markets. NAB says its list is based on Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
figures, though the FCC's lists haven't been updated since July 18:

- The FCC's meeting on Thursday will be devoted to Hurricane Katrina:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-260918A1.pdf>

- The FCC's report to Congress on retransmission consent (and exclusivity) says
that if Congress decides to cap broadcaster compensation, broadcasters "should
be granted full carriage rights for their digital broadcast signals, including
all free over-the-air digital multicast streams:

- The biggest news I've heard from the International Broadcasting Convention in
Amsterdam (which I did not attend this year) is Thomson's Infinity
"digital-media" HD camcorder, which records on Iomega REV PRO removable disk
and Compact Flash media and compresses with DV, MPEG-2, and JPEG2000 codecs:

- The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) has approved the standard
for its Advanced Common Application Platform (ACAP). The first URL is for the
press release; the second is for the standard:

- The London and New York HDFEST screenings will reportedly use DivX HD coding
on standard DVDs:

- ***** The 12th annual Technology Retreat will be held by the Hollywood Post
Alliance at the Marriott Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Ranch Mirage, California
February 22-24 (maybe with one or more seminars the day before). Proposals for
presentations, demonstrations, and breakfast roundtables are now being
accepted. Topics include anything associated with television and related
technologies: asset management, bit-rate reduction, broadcast, cable, consumer
physical media, digital cinema, digital cinematography, editing, fiber,
graphics, IPTV, laws, rights management, satellite, servers, targeted
commercials, UDTV, video forensic analysis, etc. We expect to have the usual
broadcasters panel, consumer video marketplace panel, Washington, update, etc.
Please contact me.
     For those of you not wanting to make presentations, mark your calendars!
At the last TechnoTreat, people who didn't register early enough were turned
away! For information about registration and sponsorships, please contact

- International H/DTV news:

     - This MediaWeek story estimated 30,000 HD TVs in Europe at the end of
2004, half of them in Germany:
<http://tinyurl.com/7j3nz>

     - There are reportedly a thousand DTT viewers in Azerbaijan:
<http://tinyurl.com/8svv4>

     - DTT may be delayed by Hong Kong's government. This story is from the
South China Morning Post:
<http://tinyurl.com/9sq6y>

     - The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union is holding an International Digital
Television Symposium, October 3-6 in Kuala Lumpur:
<http://www.worldscreen.com/newscurrent.php?filename=abu908.htm>

     - There are 49-Euro DTT receivers on sale in France:
<//www.freelists.org/archives/opendtv/09-2005/msg00113.html>

- Based on figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), sales to
U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets for the first 33 weeks of 2005 were
down 11.4% from the same period in 2004; my ten-week running average was down
22.6%.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 33rd week
were 65,311 units and for the first 33 weeks 2,412,215 (compared to 11,987,024
for sets not called "digital" by CEA). Sales of so-called "Digital
Televisions" for the 33rd week were, once again, lower than for the same week
in 2004.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.8% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 33rd week this
year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 83% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 33rd week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.
