     - ***The Technology Retreat*** - There have been many additions to the
January 26-28 event in the last few days:
          - What does the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water have to
do with the future of digital imagery? Come to "The Fabulous Fiber
Future," presented by Eric Fankhauser of Evertz, and you just might find
out. Can 4K files stay put and still be useful? Hear sgi's thoughts on
the subject from Chris Golson. How can all needed metadata be gathered in
the field? Listen to Kevin Manbeck of Mathematical Technologies (MTI)
describe "Control Dailies." What's the International Standard Audiovisual
Number, and why is it important? Merrill Weiss will be happy to tell you.
How do you blend film, SD, HD, and digital cinematography? Ask Thomson's
Mark Chiolis. What's the role of motion compensation in noise reduction?
Try Digital Vision's Bjorn Christensson for the answer.
          - I'll continue to plague you with this stuff until January 23rd
or so, so do yourself a favor and register NOW so you can safely ignore me:

     - May 1 -
          - Neither the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) nor the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have updated their lists since the
last memo.
          - Doug Lung's RF Report says the FCC CDBS database listed 635
licensed DTT stations as of November 21, one LESS than in his last summary:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=657>

- The FCC's Consumer Advisory Committee met last Friday and reportedly made
recommendations regarding digital television, but I don't know what they
were:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-254481A1.pdf>

- The U.S. Cout of Appeals for the District of Columbia acted on Paxson's
August petition and has given the FCC 30 days to explain why it hasn't
ordered cable systems to carry DTT multicasts. The full story requires a
paid subscription:

- Voom's last-reported subscriber figures were actually DOWN from the
previous report, but that hasn't prevented the HD-heavy satellite service
from ordering five new satellites that, in conjunction with advanced
compression coding and spot beams, are to allow them to carry more than
5,000 HD channels. Meanwhile, they plan to roughly double their HD
channels (to more than 70) by using another satellite starting in March of
next year (they also plan to add 200 SD channels):

- Leichtman Research Group says there was HDTV (from any source) in 7% of
U.S. households as of the end of September, almost double last year's
figure. But, "The majority of consumers in households with DTV sets are
not actually watching HD programming, but they think that they are":
<http://www.cedmagazine.com/cedailydirect/2004/1104/cedaily041122.htm#1>

- International H/DTV news:

     - The New South Wales Office of Fair Trading sent
mystery shoppers to 50 retailers in Sydney and Newcastle and also tested
ordinary shoppers. The basic findings: Consumers don't understand the
technology, and 30% of salespeople unacceptably don't help:
<http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/pdfs/corporate/reportonpurchasingaplasmat
v.pdf>

     - LG has started selling 71-inch plasma TVs in Korea for 80 million
won ($75,000). They're reportedly backordered already:
<http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/tech/200411/kt2004112217300011810.htm>

- I'm not permitted to reveal CEA's 44th-week factory sales info until
tomorrow, so you'll have to wait until the next memo.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV (presumably
Hughes) units at Good Guys and Ultimate Electronics.

- The ads - There may be some LCD and plasma "instant rebates" I missed at
DataVision; the ad said they applied to all LCD and plasma TVs, but they
were only listed on some. I did the calculation only for the ones listed.
     Some of the model numbers at Video & Audio Center seem strange to me.

- DVD news:

     - Again, I'm not permitted to reveal CEA 44th-week factory sales info
until tomorrow, so you'll have to wait.

     - I was struck by the following in a CompUSA ad: a DVD player (mystery
brand) for $19.95 after mail-in rebate and a 25-pack of either DVD-R or
DVD+R disks for $7.99.

     - The major UK retailer Dixons is planning to phase out VCRs by the
end of this year:

- Satellite news: I think in the on-again, off-again battles over the
spending bill in Congress, this is currently off, but it appeared as though
Congress was about to require EchoStar (and everyone else, but only they
are affected) to provide local channels without requiring a second dish
within 18 months and to allow satellite viewers in areas not served by
broadcasts to continue to get network programming. The latter provision
was due to expire at the end of the year, which, unless Congress comes back
in December to work on this, looks like it will happen:

but from about a million a year ago:
