confusion.”In this book, Fiona and Terryl Givens trace the roots of our
religious vocabulary, explore how a flawed inheritance compounds the wounds and
challenges of a life devoted to discipleship, and suggest ways of reformulating
our language in more healthy ways — all in the hope that, as B. H. Roberts
urged, we may all “cooperate in the works of the Spirit” to find “a truer
expression” of a gospel restored.
To me, this book is uplifting. It explains an unalignment I've felt between
the language we've used in the past to explain gospel doctrines/principles and
the language I hear in General Conference. For example, repentance is
punitive, compared to it's a chance to reposition ourselves toward God (thanks,
Cheryl, for that Relief Society comment).
The Givens are widely acclaimed scholars and faithful Church members. Although
they're scholars, this is not a boring, long-winded read.
The book is only 188 pages long.
If you don't have time to read it all, Part 2 would probably be the most
informative. And Part 3, which is only about 10 pages long.
