I would require all written assessments to be done in your presence, on paper,
no computers. I would ask her to come in during lunch and start from scratch.

Subject: [ola] Grading Online Courses
All,
I'm looking for advice on how to grade students who are enrolled in an online
course.
I have a student who is taking Spanish I on Odysseyware by herself in a study
hall. She was enrolled in our Spanish I class but was off pace for
demonstrating competency and withdrew with a failing grade in April.
Upon completion of the online program she will need to demonstrate mastery of
our competencies with an OPI as well as listening/reading and speaking/writing
assessments.
I am grading her first assignment and right off the bat it's all Google
Translate:
Siempre juego con mis animales de la granja.
Nunca Miento
No hablar con mucha gente, a menus, que tenga tambien.
Hago mis tareas en el hogar al tiempo y hablar con mi novio.
Does anyone have experience with what to do here? If it were in my classroom it
would be a 0% without the chance to retake.
The way I see it I have two choices:
1. Grade as a 0% without the chance to retake. Continue with that policy.
or
2. Tell her to fix the last two sentences and continue grading it even when I
see Google Translate. She may pass Odysseyware but she does not earn credit
until she demonstrates proficiency during her OPI and assessments.
I'm leaning towards 1. because formative grading should be similar to summative
grading and online grading should be similar to classroom grading.
I would love to hear your thoughts. I know this is a hot topic for many schools.
Thank you,
Warren
