IMMEDIATE RELEASE, THURSDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2018
McFadden – Brexit Ministers turning his department into “conspiracy-theory
central”
At ministerial questions in the House of Commons this morning, Brexit Minister
Steve Baker endorsed the claim from Jacob Rees-Mogg that he (Baker) had been
told that, “officials in the Treasury had deliberately developed a model to
show that all options other than staying in the Customs Union were bad and that
officials intended to use this to influence policy.”
Commenting, Pat McFadden MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign,
said:
“The way the Brexit Minister spoke about the civil service from the despatch
box both today and earlier in the week speaks volumes about what Brexit is
doing to our politics.
“This week we’ve seen Ministers rubbish their own Government’s documents,
attack all forecasting, take pot shots at the Bank of England and reprimand
parliament about its role. None of this is healthy for our democracy.
“The response to the reports of the Government’s Brexit analysis have been like
something from conspiracy-theory central. The truth is some Brexiters don’t
care what any economic forecast says because they are prepared to have the
public pay any economic price in order to fulfil their nationalist dreams of
achieving the hardest Brexit possible.”
