HI Everyone,
It is getting that time of year when raptors are at the forefront of my world
:) As coordinator for the East Cascades Audubon Society's Winter Raptor Survey
Project I have been working the last few weeks to see which routes I will need
new volunteers for this coming winter. I would like to advertise the following
routes needing a warm body this winter:

For those participating in this project, surveys are completed once a month for
the months of December, January and February. A participant should have at
least a pair of binoculars to get close looks at birds to identify them to
species and if you have a spotting scope even better. You should feel
comfortable with identifying the more common species of raptors such as
Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, Northern Harriers, Rough-legged Hawks, and
Bald Eagles. Together these species account for more than 90% of the birds
counted on these surveys. Over the course of the 11 seasons that this project
has been active, 30 species of birds of prey have been recorded so awareness of
other species makes this project that more exciting :)
Depending on the length of the survey routes, these surveys can last 4-7 hours.
If you respond for a particular route, I can give you much more specific
information about length, species seen already, average time needed to complete
surveys, and other bits of information that will help you decide for sure if
you wish to take this on for the winter. We have a few weeks left before the
effort officially begins so I have time to get you set up for the action. If
any of these routes seem appealing to you, please email me and I will get you
set up. This project has just over 250 routes throughout the four state area
(OR,ID,WA,CA) surveyed by nearly 200 volunteers covering more than 15,000 miles
of transects so you would be joining a very large and active citizen science
project! I hope to fill all of these vacant routes for this winter, I will
fill them on a first come first served basis so hope to hear from you soon!
