Yes, I was conducting daily bird surveys in the Ellsworth preserve near
Willapa Bay may years ago in June and a female Rufous Hummingbird would
visit the ashes of a fire ring at our campsite there in the evening.

Last winter, I spread some fireplace ashes on my potato bed to add some
nutrients and help lower the acidity of the soil. Three times in the past
week, I’ve witnessed a female Anna’s Hummingbird land in a spot where the
ashes have not dissolved and apparently eat the ashes. Maybe she’s
replacing minerals lost due to egg production?
