Hi -
The past 2 years Chuck Philo has found a drake (Eurasian) Common Teal in the
seasonal pond (flooded horse pasture) on the north side of HWY 20 between
Toledo and Newport, accessed by McNary Lane. Earlier this week he informed me
that it was back, and also present were 2 hybrid drakes. I checked them out
today, and found the apparently pure Common Teal and at least one of the
hybrids, which had both the white stripe on the scapulars and a white bar on
the side of the breast, also noticeable white boundary on the face just below
the eye, separating green from chestnut. Both may have been present but I only
saw 1 at a time, among the 50+ Green-winged Teal present. Presumably these are
offspring of the returning male and a female Green-winged Teal, a good example
of the Stephen Stills effect.
Also in the area:
Hatfield oriole still present
hybrid goldeneye at the south jetty
several juv male Red-breasted Mergansers getting black faces
Long-tailed Duck
