The problem y'all are having is that you're not thinking in four
dimensions...
Yes, you are walking to and from, but the amount of SPACE you cover
is dependent on the distance you go in one direction. Walking in one
direction gets you length. That's what you record. However, the time
you spend is the time forward AND the time back. That's how the math
works and it's that extra TIME that nets the extra birds.
The issue of protocol here is not how much you walked, but how much
space you covered and how much time you spent covering that space.
Doubling the distance, because you walked to and from in a space
confuses the math.
Yes, you worked hard. You walked all the way out there and all the way
back, but from a wildlife inventory perspective, we don't care how many
calories you burned, we care about much time you spent in a given AREA
and that AREA is determined by the linear dimension in one direction.
