The Mountain Quail and Black Rail stories reminded me of the time Paul Sullivan
joined me (was it a CBC in the 90s?) to try for a Virginia Rail at the Rainier
High School wetlands. Paul played his recording and we soon saw subtle movement
in the sedges and rushes. He set the recorder down on the trail and we stepped
back about ten feet. All of a sudden the rail burst out of the grass, stomped
on the recorder and disappeared whence he came! Elapsed time: two seconds max!
