For storm-tossed times like these it is useful (and fascinating) to keep track
of this webpage, which shows real-time extrapolated renderings of wind speed
and directions:
http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-113.52,13.56,398

Once the data has downloaded and the winds are swirling, double-click on the
portion of the globe you want to zoom in to, and drag the globe surface around
as needed. Single-clicking gives you the wind speed at the spot you clicked on.

Then click on "earth" in the lower left to access all kinds of other data
visualizations -- winds at different altitudes, wave simulations, ocean
currents, air pollution patterns, etc. You can also adjust the time forward and
backward to visualize past and future predicted patterns of all these things.

Now if only they would add data overlays for Black-vented Shearwaters,
Red-billed Tropicbirds, inland storm-waif Red Phalaropes, etc.
