Subject: [obol] Coos Gnatcatcher/Trop K-YES
Just saw the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher found by Robyn and Don Henise yesterday.
It is along the north dike of the old Weyco pond site. The dike passes the
open pond and the dike forks- to the left it follows the willows south and
to the right the dike continues toward ocean. It was just west of this fork
down below on south side of dike. Thanks Don and Robyn- that was #360 for
Coos for me!!
Tropical K was still on fenceline at south end of N Bend airport at the end
of Marion St- this is across the road from Pony Village Mall.
Awsome dry November weather (for those who like dry weather)-Happy birding
all!

*SUMMARY AND HIGHLIGHTS;*
Cold bright Sunday morning with 14 birders with 3.4 miles of birding
footwork. Thanks to Paul Evans and Kay Fagan for lead on this busy
multi-use trail. We headed through the field near the 3rd parking to the
brightness of the north-easterly Natural Area. We joined high person trail
activity the entire way. We had low bird yield number sighting, probably
connected with the temperature and much of the berry-raisin food is done,
with few bugs in the air. But we can say with confidence the members had
good looks at the species and enjoyed themselves immensely.
Thanks to eagle eyes we picked up looks of *AMERICAN KESTREL,* through
branches and shrubbery thanks also to leaves-be-gone on distant perches.
The Bald Eagle pair nor the sub adult showed, but we will continue looking
through the winter and the upcoming Salem Aububon CBC in this Sector #4.
The "1" of any census on birding is always intriguing and we had a single
* MERLIN, *chased by a *MEW GULL* over the water and down the river seen
from the river trail. It was truly remarkable connection of the most
unlikely birds to have confrontation.
We had a single *SPOTTED SANDPIPER* on the river edge across.
We had a single *CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE*, in the woodland stand and the
natural area where last year a Mountain Chickadee was found by Fred and
Kay.
We had a single *TOWNSEND WARBLER* found with 2* RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET* in
an ash tree and in shade, across from the evergreen woodland in the Natural
Area
Our last bird of the walk was a *RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER*. The tree where
seen today is notable with prior attraction- juvenile being seen
accompanied by an adult in the past. Today in concert with the sapsucker,
an *ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD* followed sipping the created sap wells.

During a brief visit this afternoon at Pintail Marsh, we spotted 6 Tundra
Swans and 2 Trumpeter Swans (after careful consultation about field marks
w/ Ankeny regulars) . There were also a good number of Great Egrets,
flyover Cacklers, various waterfowl and a small flock of shorebirds. Eagle
Marsh had one Greater Yellowlegs and 250 Mallards on our brief stop going
out.

Subject: [obol] Fryrear Canyon - A Protected Nesting Area for Birds of Prey
KTZV.com reported on 24 January 2017 that the Bureau of Land Management
Prineville District started implementing a series of annual wildlife
closures to protect several species of birds of prey during sensitive
nesting periods. Included among the closures is Fryrear Canyon located 6
miles southeast of Sisters Oregon which we first visited on new years' day
2012. Fryrear Canyon is now regularly closed to all users from February 1
to August 31.
Below are a few landscape images from our recent search for evidence of
raptor nests amidst the canyon walls. While our search yielded only one
nest we were able to enjoy but not photograph several bird species
including, CLARK'S NUTCRACKER, CANYON WREN, COMMON RAVEN, SONG SPARROW,
MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, OREGON JUNCO, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, and PYGMY NUTHATCH.
We like this 5-mile round-trip bird walk, it's easy in and out over flat
terrain and once you reach the entrance to canyon you are soon consumed by
the narrow width and low height of the canyon walls that make it obvious
why birds choosing to nest in this habitat would be vulnerable to human
activity in and around the canyon.

Subject: [obol] Raptor ID Help
Anyone: A small raptor flew into a neighbors window and died. Click the
link (or copy and paste into browser) to view 4 images of it. I tend to
think this is a Merlin based on wing colors/design and shape, but am not
convinced it is not an immature male Sharpie. Any input would be
appreciated.

Hi Susan,
Looks spot-on for a Merlin to me. Sharpie should have more rounded wings
with a different pattern underneath, a different tail pattern, and coarser
streaks on the chest. In one of the photos you can also see the little hook
on the side of the upper mandible (known as the "falcon's tooth") that is
characteristic for falcons and lacking in other raptors.
Too bad this beauty met an early demise!
