EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Manager: Malheur Field Station
The Great Basin Society is looking for a person to be responsible for the
day-to-day operation of Malheur Field Station (MFS), an environmental education
facility located in the beautiful high desert of southeastern Oregon. MFS
occupies an old Job Corps Center located on the Malheur National Wildlife
Refuge.
The mission of The Great Basin Society, Inc., doing business as Malheur Field
Station, is dedicated to facilitating environmental education in the High
Desert region of the Great Basin. Our programs are based on the philosophy of
lifelong learning. The Great Basin Society is an independent, non-profit, 501
(c)(3) organization.
On site at MFS are dormitories and house trailers for public rental, a dining
hall, classrooms and labs, a gym, a museum, an office, and a gift shop. The
entire station is open to the public from late March through September and some
lodging facilities are open all year. Educational programs (school-group
visits, weekend programs, professional development workshops, Road Scholar
programs) generally occur from May through September.
Desired qualifications for this position include strong personnel and
facilities-management skills, good communication skills, familiarity with
computer accounting programs, an interest in environmental education, and the
ability to work independently in an isolated environment. MFS is open seven
days a week and many activities occur on weekends, therefore, seasonal
flexibility in managing work schedules is critical.
Hands-on duties include: managing the reservation system for lodging and
dining; procuring and coordinating natural history programs; oversight of
office, maintenance, housekeeping, and dining hall functions; hiring and
supervising seasonal staff; supervising volunteers; preparation of periodic
reports to the Board and government agencies as required by law or the Board.
The position involves extensive interaction with the public in person, by
phone, and email.
This position is full-time, salaried (exempt), and includes medical benefits
and housing. Living on-site is a requirement of the position. Annual paid leave
is 2 weeks of vacation leave and 6 paid holidays. Sick leave accrual is 1
day/month. Starting salary is $40-47,500/year (plus housing) depending upon
experience.
The position is open until filled. Starting date is negotiable.
Please email your cover letter and resume to The Great Basin Society president,
Vern Beeson. (vern_anne@xxxxxxxxxxx).
[We also anticipate hiring a seasonal “office person”. A “team” hire for both
positions would be considered.]
