Always looking for gullstraction. Just in the last 10 days
California has had Ross's, Black-tailed, and multiple
Slaty-backed so it’s a good year to be checking pastures
apparently.

Just to illustrate a difficulty I struggle with, I think
the Herring here might also be a (pale-eyed) Thayer's.
It has fairly large apical spots, white lines running up
the inner edges of the primary stacks likely indicating
large white mirrors and tongues, and it appears to have
a dark mark only on one web of P5 instead of a full band
more typical of Herring. I'm also seeing a slight grayish
tone to the black, although that could be exposure-
related. The bill is difficult to assess since it could be full
of mud and partially open.

Don't know what the gxgw is exactly, but it is a 2nd-cycle
so the bill pattern isn't atypical for Glaucous-winged at
this age.

Cheers, Phil

Those looking for a distraction may enjoy perusing the gull photos
I took in the rain today, including a GLAUCOUS GULL, a pale-eyed
MEW GULL and a thing which I'm guessing is some sort of mew-ish
monstrosity.

There are thousands of gull right now along Wireless Rd which
should keep me busy through the great darkening...
