I agree about late summer. The young draw attention to themselves then,
while the adults are more furtive and quiet all year.

I have seen two or three in the s. valley this spring. Not a lot, but they
tend to be less visible until early summer around Eugene, after which they
are typically fairly obvious, probably as a consequence of starting to feed
young.
