Re: previous Rock Wren reports in Lincoln County. With the one seen
today, the most common place (4 of 8 records) to see one is around the
Yaquina Head Interpretative Center, formerly known as the Upper
Quarry.
The first was reported at Yaquina Head during Nov. 13-Dec. 24, 1988
(Jim Johnson; Kathy Liska; Anthony Floyd); Jim first found it perched
at the Upper Quarry (which is now where the Interpretative Center is)
on Nov. 13. Kathy also saw one in the Lower Quarry (now known as
Quarry Cove) on Nov. 20, and said that she had previously heard them
singing in the upper quarry but had not seen one.

1993. Our second record of a ROCK WREN was found by CL and others at
Smelt Sands Wayside just north of Yachats on 9/12; it was watched for
about 40 minutes from a distance of 2O feet.
2001. A ROCK WREN picked insects off the walls at the US Coast Guard
Air Facility, Newport, throughout December 2000 and was last observed
on 12/30 (JMe). It was recorded during Count Week of the Yaquina Bay
CBC. DF, CP, RC, and WN, along with JM, the pioneering rock-wrenner,
finally got a good look at the ROCK WREN at the Coast Guard Air
Facility, Newport Airport on 1/28. It foraged for insects on the
ground around the perimeter of the building and then checked out the
helicopter and equipment inside the hangar before flying up for a
thorough search of the rafters (RC). The ROCK WREN
still frequented Coast Guard air facility as of mid-March (JM).
2009. On 7/5, CP discovered a rare ROCK WREN singing in a clearcut at
the head of North Beaver Creek Road near the junction with the GP 1000
Line road.
2011. On 5/14, CP heard a ROCK WREN in some 2-3 year old clearcuts
about 1-2 miles south of Stott Mountain at high elevations in
northeastern Lincoln County. RH sighted another on 5/17 at Yaquina
Head for his bird group and promptly reported it, which resulted in DH
being also able to see it later that day. These are only our 5th and
6th records (SemiL).
2015. On 6/9, Hendrik Herlyn saw a ROCK WREN that hopped around the
cliff face just above the Peregrine Falcon nest by the Yaquina Head
Visitor Center. ... May-June searching at Yaquina Head may reveal
more.

This morning one, and probably two ROCK WRENS were singing sporadically at
Yaquina Head, from quarry walls and cliffs east of the the Visitor Center
parking lot. First noticed by Chuck Philo.
