Elegants haven’t been seen in good numbers in Coos in several years. They
were only seen one day last year with a total of two. This species is sort
of irruptive with good numbers for a few years and none other years. The
last few years the best numbers were on the far south coast (Curry) and far
north coast in Oregon with most reports from later in August and September
so still a bit early for them. So far the furthest north report on eBird is
the Klamath River mouth in CA on 7/23.
In years where they arrive in big numbers in OR you can watch the numbers
grow into the hundreds on eBird in Crescent City just before the arrive in
big numbers in OR. Been close to 10 yrs since I observed 1,000 in Gold
Beach- that was super cool!
