Here, too at Thornton Creek, Lincoln Co. House Sparrows are very rare. I've
seen them probably four or five times in sixty years.

I've lived at three different residences in north Eugene, ranging in habitat
from Doug fir/oak-woodland to former farmland with limited trees to something
in between, and I've had House Sparrows at my feeders maybe two or three times
in 10 years. If I drive a quarter mile to the strip mall with the McDonald's or
half mile the mall with the Carl's Jr., I'll find them pretty easily. Here,
they seem to prefer either urban areas with fast food joints or farmland.
Oddly enough, I've only hosted one or two Mourning Doves in the yard, and
that's a species that's very common around many parts of town. I get my share
of starlings, but not many outside of May. Having grown up in the suburban
sprawl of Chicago and dealt with these pest species (plus large flocks of
Common Grackles) on a much larger scale, I consider myself very lucky.

I know this isn't stunning bird news, but we have 2 HOUSE SPARROWS are
the feeder right now. This undoubtedly is the first time ever that
House Sparrow is in capital letters on OBOL, and I realize that is
ridiculous, but the truth is we never ever ever have House Sparrows here
in the yard, and we are literally miles in every direction from any
place that does have House Sparrows. They certainly were not here
yesterday. I am left with the burning question of huh? what? where the
heck did you come from, where are you going, and why, in this crazy
nasty weather, are you suddenly arriving in our very rural location?
Maybe they are from Mongolian too?
Cheers
