Hello All,
Chris Maack and I spent some time at the South Jetty of Yaquina Bay and on the
Estuary Trail today (3/19/2024). What good fortune to see the herring run and
so many beautiful birds.
Highlights from the Estuary Trail: Brandt, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common
Loons. An interesting, noisy young gull begging and chasing an adult Western
Gull. Eventually there were two adult gulls attending the begging juvenile.
Seems early for a begging juvenile? There were a couple gull-like birds diving
into the water reminding me of a feeding tern. Never could get a really good
look for a positive identification.
At the South Jetty: in the morning, Harlequin Ducks, Common Loons, Surf
Scoters, Bufflehead, American Wigeon and a Eurasian Wigeon, immature Bald
Eagles, Red-breasted Merganser, Pigeon Guillemot. In the afternoon there was
one Long-tailed Duck (a female) with the Surf Scoters, and eight Greater
White-fronted Geese grazing along the road.
Innumerable gulls.
Also plenty of Harbor Seals to watch.
