The 43rd Yaquina Bay CBC was held on Saturday, January 2nd and as you
all likely know it was COLD, clear and sunny. As the count compiler I
was personally beyond grateful that 29 volunteers were willing to
spend a full day birding in the bitter east wind. Thank you to each
of them and to the additional 12 feeder counters. Some data is still
coming in but here are some highlights from the day. So far we have
tallied 141 bird species for count day.
A single WHITE PELICAN was seen by multiple people at different places
from late morning until early afternoon. The ORCHARD ORIOLE and the
MOUNTAIN PLOVER were both seen early in the day and we heard many
other birders not participating in the count also showed up to see
these two rare coastal visitors yesterday. SNOWY PLOVER were also
present at South Beach State Park. NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen and
heard. Large rafts of waterfowl were scattered throughout the lower
part of Yaquina Bay and included hundreds and in some cases thousands
of SURF SCOTER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, AMERICAN WIGEON, RUDDY DUCK, GREATER
SCAUP. Mixed in with the large waterfowl flocks were BRANT, WESTERN
GREBE, CANVASBACK, COMMON GOLDENEYE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a single
CLARK'S GREBE.
