The final data is in and has been reported for the Yaquina Bay CBC.
This was the 44th count for Yaquina Bay and we had 24 field observers
and 11 feeder counters. The total number of species for the day was
144.
This year we had our highest counts ever for Cackling Goose (63
birds), Western Snowy Plover (11), Great Horned Owl (5), Anna's
Hummingbirds (103), Western Scrub Jay (7) and Hairy Woodpecker (17).
Other interesting birds to note included a Northern Mockingbird, a
Black-crowned Night Heron, a Cassin's Auklet by the Public Fishing
Pier, an orange-crowned warbler, five mountain quail, two Glaucous
Gulls (one seen by Wayne Hoffman and another by Lars Norgren and Phil
Pickering) and a male Mandarin Duck. The last bird was seen during
the count last year and is living in Ollala Slough in Toledo. Though
it is a species we recorded during the CBC it is not a countable
species for "total species" because it is not recognized as an AOU
species. Regardless, it's been interesting to see this same duck
twice on the Yaquina Count now.
Ranger Bayer graciously updated the Yaquina Bay CBC information
through the 43rd count for Yaquina Bay. If you are interested the

some information he summarized from it: During 43 Yaquina Bay CBC's
from 1973/1974 (Count 74) through 2015/2016 (Count 116), an average of
120 species/Count Day were found, and the average for the past 10
years was 136 species/Count Day. The first two CBC's were the only
years with fewer than 100 species. The peak count was 152 species in
2014/2015. There were 120 or more species in 23 CBC's, 130 or more in
12 CBC's, and 140 or more in the CBC counts in3 CBC's.
