I got a call from Dan Fay on Thursday that an AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN was being seen on the Astoria Waterfront underneath the
Megler Bridge. The bird made the local paper as well, but I
didn't get around to seeing it until this morning.

It's pretty clearly an immature bird (not juvenile as reported in
the paper) and is possibly a bird rehabbed by the North Coast Wildlife
Center and released recently.

I watched it swimming in the river for maybe 10 minutes then it
took off, flying in a steady (and healthy looking) straight line
up river. Presumably it will find the rest of the lower Columbia
pelican hanging out on Rice Island.
