[obol] While you're looking for longspurs in Horned Lark flocks ....

Hi All,

Just to call attention to the last bit in Randy Moore's message
regarding the lark flock with longspurs at Country/Seward/McLagan Rds
(about 2 miles WSW of Tangent in Linn County):

If you go look and the larks are close enough, check their legs for
bands! I'd love to hear about them if anyone sees bands.

Randy of course is hoping that someone will find one of the color-banded
larks that he's banded over the years as part of his research at
Corvallis Airport. There could also be larks from the migratory South
Puget Sound subpopulation, which have been banded by the Center for
Natural Lands Management in Olympia.

With the big numbers (360) that Randy estimated, it seems highly likely
that many of these larks are migrants, so that increases the odds of
finding one of the Puget Sound birds.

Once again this winter, I'll coordinate a winter Horned Lark survey
to help make sure that we manage to scope out as many of these flocks
as possible, and report any banded larks to the appropriate research/
monitoring teams.

If you're interested, let me know and I'll send you the info packet
(aiming for Dec 1st as the official starting date, but it never hurts
to start early).

One new wrinkle this year is that we'll also be looking for any signs
of avian-pox type growths on the larks' faces. Unfortunately signs of
this (or a similar) disease were seen on the South Puget Sound larks
during the 2015 breeding season, so there's concern that this could
spread in wintering flocks as migrant larks come into close proximity
with resident larks.

So please check the legs, but also the faces of any larks that come
close enough.

Happy scoping,
Joel
