We had a great day of birding despite failing to relocate many of the birds
from the past 2 weeks on CBCs. The First Street Rapids trail was more active
later in the a.m., as we finished it around 10 a.m. A mixed flock of many
passerines was along the trail and allowed us to study it for 30 minutes or
more but no one pulled out a Black capped Chickadee. The Virginia Rail
running across an open space was a treat. Against the white snow it wasn't
the usual hidden skulker.
Spent most of the time around Prineville. The birch trees along Grimes had
zero birds. We stopped there twice without luck. The house with birch trees
lining their driveway, address along Barnes Butte Rd had about 20 mostly
American Goldfinch but no Redpolls. The resident gentleman was fine with us
scanning for his "Tweety Birds" and had already guessed what we were doing.
We did not find any blackbird flocks with mixed species but enjoyed the
raptor selection while trying to get to them. Two Ferruginous Hawks in the
field along Grimes were beautiful in the good sunlight. Red-shouldered Hawk
was in the tree at the first curve in the road at the Prineville wastewater
ponds, near the tree with the heron rookery. We were unable to find the
Eurasian Wigeon today. Fifty-nine species seen today.

birding routes we saw Evan Thomas, Mark Gonzales, and Mike Golden. Next
