The GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and other birds were very cooperative early this
morning. The sparrow was up signing its heart out when I arrived at 5:30
this morning. It flew out to the middle of the deep grass to the north
before I left it to explore more of the prairie. When I returned an hour
and a half later it was on the same perch that I originally found it.
I would feel better about this post if the sparrow's perch was off the
beaten path rather than right on it. We've heard this is a rare nesting
species in the Willamette Valley and will likely be adversely affected by
too much attention. So, if you go, please be careful with your distance
and avoid playback - you don't need it.
There are several other species on territory immediately south of the perch
which I was tempted to explore but after talking it over with another
birder we agreed that we should stay on the mowed path. Hopefully, others
will follow suit.
Lots of eye candy out there.
