I lied when I said that the Bewick’s Wren at Enterprise was a new Wallowa
county bird for me. When I got home and checked my records I found that I had
recorded 4 Bewick’s Wrens in Wallowa county down near Troy on July 6, 2004.
Nonetheless, this is the first up in the valley around Enterprise. If the
species moved up the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers instead of cutting
overland through high elevation forest, they had to travel over 70 miles in
those 14 years.
Incidently, I found a Bewick’s Wren on the Christmas Bird County in Union
County in 1984, twenty years before the Troy birds.
This species has been expanding up the Columbia and its tributaries for as long
as I’ve been birding in the Pacific Northwest. We were excited to find one
near Pullman WA in the early ‘80’s. Now they are common well east of Lewiston
ID up the Clearwater River.

I forgot the best find of the day. We found a new species for me in Wallowa
county! We found a Bewick' s WREN. It was at the bridge over the Wallowa
River, just North of the outlet of the lower Fishhatchery pond.
