Hi again, OBOL. Here's a different type of report from the field.....
The Western Field Ornithologists conference in Fortuna, California, this past
weekend was fantastic, and Oregonians made the best showing in years. Among us
were (at least; I hope I'm not missing anyone) four youth birders in their
teens:
* Parker Gerard from Bend, who won a WFO youth scholarship this year;
* Kai Frueh of Corvallis, who also won a youth scholarship;
* Isaac Denzer of Philomath, who won a youth scholarship last year; and
* Kai's younger brother Benjamin.
See: http://www.westernfieldornithologists.org/scholarship.php
Isaac, Kai, Benjamin, and I teamed up in the Sounds Competition against some of
the top birders in the West, and we would have taken second place if I'd only
listened to Isaac's contention that a mysterious wing-whirring belonged to
Hooded Merganser rather than Common Goldeneye.
All in all, these talented young birders represented Oregon well!
Next year's WFO conference will be held in Pueblo, Colorado, and youth
scholarships will again be offered. Check the WFO website in coming months for
details.
