After 16 years of maintaining a well-stocked feeding table in my backyard,
which has a large jungle of trees, shrubs and smaller plants covering the back
half of my lot, a covey of 9 Valley Quail moved in two months ago. I saw a
small covey here briefly the first year, but they didn't stay. I've had a
chance to study and photograph them through an open window. Their system of
alertness and instant departure seems among the best of all birds. Several
neighbors' cats have tried their utmost, but have had no success in catching
them. The almost solid cover of trees shrouds the feeder, so it isn't a good
target for hawks. I'm writing this as an excuse to try attaching a photo for
the first time, as an attachment. There's many more photos and videos of them
on my Flickr Photostream.
