Hi all, As I was trying to suggest in my postings last evening, a tool for recording "unofficial," multi-observer counts on the web has been operational in Oregon since 1998. Below are the tallies from the 17th Troy (unofficial) CBC which was held in January of 2003, as entered in the BirdNotes database (www.birdnotes.net) by Ralph Anderson. The BirdNotes project is still up and running, into its 16th year now. It is area-based rather than point-based, so it is easy to use for this type of purpose. If you would like assistance in using BirdNotes to record data for an unofficial "CBC," or to to run a count on an existing CBC circle outside of the official CBC window of time, I'll be glad to help (though not in the coming week -- after Dec 13th would be better). I do think that the best use of this tool, in this context, would be for counts in some other part of the year. That is to avoid siphoning volunteers away from official CBCs which are understaffed. An additional good use might be to run unofficial CBCs in sparsely populated areas that are remote from existing CBC circles, where it might be difficult or impossible to meet National Audubon's recently stiffened criteria for establishing new CBCs (e.g. guaranteeing at least 10 counters every year). I have one such count in mind for Dec 19th, and will announce it if and when I can find time to sort out the details.
